I am curious! Many states have given their governors line item veto power. This has proven to be a great tool. Congress has, for obvious reasons, not allowed this to happen.
Line iten veto power could curb pork barreling and if Congress really wanted something the could simply(ok-maybe not so simple) over-ride a veto.
What do others think about this and how it could improve our lives? Is it time for the American people to demand this?

I think it's A good idea.

I think it is a GREAT idea! I really wish the President did have it to DROP KICK pork barrel spending! That would be awesome to see some smug Senator getting his/her stupid CRAP into a bill get slapped in the chops after the bill is signed. This is one of my pet peeves right here...along with 2 term limits for Senators...

I certainly see why you are pro-term limit. I differ from many in that sometimes a solution may not be the best but better than what we have now.
A problem we have, I feel, on Capital Hill, is the longer you serve, the more powerful you become.
Evidence of this was when we had a record number of new congressmen were voted in because they ran on the platform of change.
Immediately they learned problems existed. They could not get nw legislation passed because it could not be brought to the floor. Even when a bill has a sponsor, and maybe a co-sponsor, it is a long process. Sometimes this is good. Bills should not be able to be changed like underwear.
After a bill is allowed on the floor it goes through a cycle of discussions, and being sent to a committee or sub-committee. A bill can sit in a committee for an undetermined amount of time or until it expires. Who runs these commitee's? Those that have been there the longest. The rules of passage are clear. The ones that has been there the longest rule.
If this could be changed then things would be better. Why not a vote, say in the house, to decide who will chair what?
This is an example, and just a rumor; I heard that the department of transportation was going to make a ruling that went against a strong member of congress. The head of the department was clear that he had the choise to make the rule. He was informed that he was right, and it was understood, and that for economic reasons his department would have no funding the next year and be merged into another.
A battled ensued and the end result was a new department head, the rules stayed the same, the congressman stayed the same, and the department was merged. I call this a rumor because I do not know the whole story, have no information to back it up, but the basic story of the rumor is true and made headlines. Maybe someone knows the story?
The point is how can you defeat something or someone when the rules make it impossible? If you play by the rules you can not win. This alone presents the possibility of corruption.
A great Senator or Congressman, doing a fantastic job, is a loss, if forced to leave. We change Presidents without our country falling apart so we could also change Congress.
I feel, for the sake of discussion, that this would not be a bad thing. I also feel that something long overdue is line item veto.
Of course a basic flaw in our system, that is easy to fix, has only been attacked in a few states. Some of these states even went nuts. I am talking about our electorial process. It does not, nor will ever, make sense that a number of people, about(I think) 1050 or so, can elect a President over the will of the majority of the people.
It should be required, by law, that state electoriates vote by popular vote. Some states require this, and some has went farther, even dividing votes by percentage. This does not futher a democratic vote. This does not present the majority rules. It is, however, a change and an attempt correct a problem.

When power is allowed to be absolute then absolute corruption is inevitable(otr500--2008).

But if Americans simply demanded a congress that was fiscally responsible we wouldn't have this problem to begin with. Not to mention to put the end of pork barrel spending in the hands of one man has it's problems. Then the definition or pork barrel spending will be in the current president. I bet Reagan's and Clintons definitions would be pretty different. Our politicians are a direct reflection of society but even though there are many demanding fiscal responsibility there aren't enough to make it a requirement for office and hold those who do not meet our standards responsible for their mismanagement. We have to make people realize the excess that exists first. For instance sources say that as much as 70% of spending on welfare goes to admin and management costs. That is crazy! We can streamline thousands of government programs and save trillions!

The funny thing is you can go back and listen to every Ronald Reagan speech and it applies as much today as it did back then!

I like the line item veto power and I also support term limits.....one term go home for a term and if you want to run again ok but never succed yourself in office. This should be in service to your country not a lifelong employment.
