Help What caused the Civil War?

What started the Civil War in your opinion? Some say slavery, some say State's rights, some say other things. Personally, I believe it was, indeed, slavery as the root cause. It was one of the most horrible, and bloody, wars in the history of the entire world. What can STOP another civil war? What have we learned from the Civil War?

Wise I wish I had my book here in the truck.....its at home but I firmly believe it was states rights and this started as early at the 1845 era if I remember correctly.......slavery just became one of the issues that put the division ovr the edge.....also it isinteresting to note that the practice ofslavery continued in the North after the war but it was illegal in the South......go figure.....

I am quite sure there are different points of view on this subject, but I believe the firing on fort sumpter was the first act of war. The argument in congress was along the lines of states rights. At that time I do not believe slavery was the main topic. Had the issue been slavery then I believe the emancipation proclamation woud have been earlier than it was. To be sure there were feeelings on each side but not enough to go to war over

First, in my opinion I believe that the root cause of the Civil War was economics. That being said, the root cause of the economic disparity was, of course, slavery.

Second, as civil wars go ours was not all that bloody. Strange as that might sound, it's true. Never the less, it it still the bloodiest war this nation has ever participated in our 220+ year history.

In my humble opinion the root cause of the Civil War was Lincoln winning the election when every single Southern State voted for Davis. That was the direct cause for Southern states succeeding from the Union. History shows us Blacks fought for the South and North. Although prior to succession abolitionism was a strong movement, slavery wasn't an issue in the Civil War until Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation making Slavery illegal.

There are quotes out there from Lincoln saying if he could patch up the Union without freeing the slaves he would: "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause." "Letter to Horace Greeley" (August 22, 1862), p. 388.

Lincoln did not want equality of races: "
"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything." The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln edited by Roy P. Basler, Volume III, "Fourth Debate with Stephen A. Douglas at Charleston, Illinois" (September 18, 1858), pp. 145-146. "

The North could not find a general worth a damn because most of the military academies were and still are in the South. The ONLY reason Lincoln freed the slaves was to have Blacks turn against Southerners and fight for the North to help speed up the process of the war because he did not want to fight the South any longer. He didn't want to free the slaves because he considered them to be inferior. So what did we learn from the Civil War? There are reasons for leaving the Union and there will always be a Federal Government to make sure this does not happen. That the Federal Government is willing to break its own Federal Laws and adopt martial law in order to preserve the Union and burn down entire cities if necessary (Sherman's March to Sea).

How can we stop a Civil War? Elect representation in Congress keeping in mind beliefs of the constituents and hope to God that is enough. Several Southern States have put the right of Succession back into State Constitution. That should be a HUGE sign to the president that his spending policies are not being accepted by the American public. We cannot sustain this level of Federal spending and if we do we will destroy our country from the outside in. If people keep electing idiots that are going to rack up our national debt we are going to destroy our economy. If inflationary effects do not destroy our economy, deflationary effects will. Congressional and Executive leaders KNOW this but they keep regurgitating the same promises of MORE benefits for the tax payer without any increase in taxes. Its a cycle that is a shame.

Is succession the answer to fixing this? Can't say for sure but I'm glad my state is one of those that has added succession back into our State Constitution.

people go back and read all the post......I think we will agree there was no one thing that sparked the beginning of the Civil War..there were many things that added until the weight of it all "broke the wagon".....
