Economic fears darken U.S. mood

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Growing anxiety about their economic prospects and deep unhappiness with President George W. Bush and the U.S. Congress plunged Americans into a dark mood this month, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.
The Reuters/Zogby Index, which measures the mood of the country, fell dramatically to 87.9, down from 95.5 in April, as nine of the 10 measures of public opinion used in the Index dropped.
Concerns about the direction of the country and personal finances rose sharply, and dissatisfaction with Bush, Congress and the administration's economic and foreign policy all climbed.

The economy may not be as strong as in the past but we still have a strong economy. Yes, there are some issues; the housing market, inflation, high gas prices, and a higher unemployment rate. The housing situation is improving if only slightly and we still have a lower unemployment rate than most other countries. People are viewing the slow down in the economy way out of proportion: If we pay off half of the national debt that will ease the inflation we are feeling. It may be done without raising taxes if we scrap frivolous government programs and divert the excess funds to pay off our national debt. If we succeed in paying back some of the national debt, the inflation level we are experiencing will subside and gas prices as a result will fall. With more money left in the pockets of Americans, they will spend more which will lift the economy out of a recession.

The economy naturally goes through ups and downs. A slow down in the economy is hardly the fall of the American Empire. If however Americans continue to elect politicians that spend, spend, spend, without paying back the national debt, the inflation rate will continue to rise, and gas prices will rise as well. $4 a gallon will look cheap. The national debt is not an issue in this presidential election and it should be.
