Lightbulb High Gas Prices--We do have some power!

High Gas Prices--We do have some power!

Well, looks like all the news pundits and economy analysts are saying the same thing---we cant use govt to lower the price of oil!! The bottom line is, if the consumers (that's you & me) just reduce our consumption by 10%, it can have a dramatic effect on the demand and thereby start lowering prices due to the supply glut.

Here's what I have done in doing my part:

1) For the past 6 months, I have parked my old 12 mpg/4K lbs Carb-SUV (except for hauling construction supplies) and use my 34 mpg Corvalier exclusively.

2) Have developed a 'loop' plan on doing my shopping & chores. In fact today, my 8 mi loop will accomplish: a haircut, trip to Home Depot, food shopping, and gas fillup at the cheapest station ($3.17/Gal) around.

3) I am going to 'for go' my summer vacation this year to spend time on the many home projects that have accumulated. Dont need to spend a lot of $$ on materials, just mainly my labor---which is free! Will postpone road trip and take an extended vacation Nov/Dec, and loop CO & TX at that time---will save 1200 miles of over all driving.

4) Also going to start 'restricting' calorie intake! It has now become an accepted fact that lowering one's caloric intake will lead to a healthier and longer life. Most of us take in 3000+ cals/day (why we are fat with our sedentary lifestyle), but only need around 2000 cals/day. Means buying less food at the grocery store.

5) And need to restart my favorite form of recreation---mountain biking. Live just 1 mile from a 20 mile bike path so have no excuses..ha ha

NOTE: And, the Ind truckers out there need to tighten their belts and go beyond complaining by driving 65 mph like all the many Nat Carriers. I heard a rule of thumb that every -1 mph cuts mileage by 0.1 gal---that is just a 'rough rule of thumb! It is not a 'linear' function; but when speed goes above about 58 mph, the friction on 18 wheels goes up 'exponentially,' meaning could start costing 0.2 g/mph or more as approaching 75 mph!! Personally, I think that all interstate speed limits shud be cut back to 65 mph max!! Then trucks wont be slowing down the flow of traffic....

BTW, Union Pacific RR has been hitting this area with TV commercials touting: "Takes 1 gal of diesel to move a car 1000 miles by rail,' and "doing our part in getting trucks off the road.'

Well, Americans, what say you?! Yall going to let OPEC and the Domestic gas companies win this standoff..????

NOT ME!...I'm too stubborn, and I enjoy the challenge..ha ha

We live in a free market, and we have been paying less then the rest of the world for decades. The real problem is we no longer have any real production in this country because of the environmental movement here, and our dependence on forign production. Its a reality we have to get used to. Green energy is a long ways off, US production too. I don't think we will ever see $1.25 gallons of gasoline again.

Correct! Lucky if we'll ever see below $2/G. It's been a long time coming, and now we will pay for not getting weaned off oil fast enuf! The Domestic Oil Co.s better be investing in other technologies (BP now calls themselves 'Beyond Petroleum!) with all their profits.

Bottom line is, America better start changing their way of thinking, just as we had to do in the early 70's when the 'muscle cars' died out!! And, ...modify our way of living.....we are a very wasteful country---just look at the plates of food left in restaurants!!
Better learn how to tighten the belt and give up a few things....I vote to get rid of NASCAR, myself---bad example of excess, including all the bad driving habits that their fans have picked up and demonstrate of the nation's hwys!!
