| Hollywood stars mum on donations to GOP By Joseph Curl, the Washington Times November 16, 2007 Republican presidential candidates have been drawing support — and cash — from Hollywood celebrities, but few of the stars in super-liberal Tinseltown want to be publicly linked with the Grand Old Party. One high-profile celebrity, when asked about her political views, even had her lawyers declare "our client's rights of privacy and other legally protectable intangible rights" and warn that she should not be labeled a Republican. So far, just a handful of actors have come forward to support Republican hopefuls. Adam Sandler, who cast former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani in a cameo role in his 2003 movie "Anger Management," has contributed $2,100 to Mr. Giuliani's campaign. The two met recently on Mr. Sandler's movie set in New York. Former "Frasier" star Kelsey Grammer and his wife also have tossed in $6,900 for the mayor. But neither would comment about their support. In fact, not a single one of the dozen actors contacted for this story who have been identified as conservative leaning would comment publicly. "Bo isn't available ... sorry," said Bo Derek's handler. "Mr. Costner is not available to be interviewed," said Kevin Costner's publicists. "I'm sorry, but unfortunately Mel is unavailable to contribute," said Mel Gibson's people. While Democrats enjoy very public support from Hollywood's top actors and musicians, who often hold lavish events for their favorite candidates, Republican supporters in Hollywood try hard to keep their political views quiet. "They learn very quickly, if they know what's good for them, to donate to the Democratic Party," said Andrew Breitbart, co-author of "Hollywood, Interrupted." "If they were to donate to the Republican Party, they would be exposed to career-ending ridicule, period." [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Political Forum Link. |

| It's true. I work in Hollywood and it is by and large, mostly liberal. Any artistic community tends to be. The funny thing about conservatives is that they bash on the Entertainment industry whenever they get low in the polls but they completely ignore the fact that Entertainment is one of the only industries where America is still far and away the world's leader. It's fine to rail against entertainers being horrible liberals with no respect for the governement or law but why then turn around and commandeer liberal artists' music for campaign purposes without asking. McCain has done it several times and been asked to stop. Jackson Browne is actually suing him. Both Bush's did it. Reagan most famously did it with Springsteen's "Born in the USA" and Melloncamp's "Pink Houses," both of which were songs that clearly contained liberal sentiments. The people stealing this music for their own devices just don't get it. And that's pretty much the difference between the artistic community and the staunch conservative community. They don't get each other. They think differently. As far as artists being blackballed for being conservative in Hollywood. One need only look at the list. The people who are talented are still working. The people who sell tickets, produce ratings and sell records are still working. Hollywood is not so much a red or blue area as a green one. The artists may be liberal but the people who sign the checks and decide what projects get made are mostly not. So, if movies suck don't blame the writers or directors or actors. they do not decide what gets made ultimately. The men with the money do. If Tom Selleck isn't working more or if Bo Derek didn't win the Oscar for "Ghosts Can't Do it" don't blame the fact that Hollywood is full of liberals. Blame the fact that Tom missed out on the Indiana Jones role and his career never rebounded to that same trajectory. Blame Bo's missing out on critical acclaim because she's a fifty something, over the hill, sex kitten who never bothered to learn how to act in case people got tired of seeing her naked. Conservatives don't live in Hollywood they just own and operate it, like everything else. If you doubt this statement's veracity, ask yourself how many people who run billion dollar companies like studios are in favor of paying the same tax percentage as a school teacher or fireman. Not bloody many. Take this into account when you think about the "liberal bias" in the news media. Nobody puts out a paper or TV show hoping it spreads ideology rather than make money. In fact, studies show that during the 2000 campaign Gore got more negative media coverage than Bush. Not because he was dumb or less qualified or was planning to destroy America's standing in the world and take a leak on the constitution. It's because casting Gore as a dull exaggerator and Bush as a straight shooting dim wit made good copy and sold more papers. So, before the tangent, my point was that Hollywood and the media are not controlled by liberal or conservative ideology. They are, like every other profit based industry, controlled by the need to make money. If America doesn't like what its getting they should stop paying for it. |
